New rules on donating organs could save 700 lives a year

Change in law to presume consent comes after large-scale public consultation

Ministers are to go ahead with an overhaul of organ donation rules in a reform they believe could save as many as 700 lives every year.

The government has confirmed that it will change the way organ donation is approved in England, meaning that most people will be presumed to have given consent for donating their organs unless they opt out of the system. They currently have to opt in.
