The death of an American missionary on a remote Indian island has sparked a backlash in India. John Allen Chau was last seen alive on the morning of 16 November. He had paid a group of fishermen to take him to the remote Indian island of North Sentinel, where a tribe is thought to have lived for more than 30,000 years with barely any outside contact.

The Guardian’s Michael Safi has been following the case, which has drawn interest from across the globe and caused uproar in India. He traces the story of the Sentinelese and their contact with colonialists and anthropologists, which foreshadowed the events of this month.
